Website design, original photography and WooCommerce development by TK Web Design
Every website project is different, but some involve much more than creating a few pages and choosing a colour scheme.
Rebuilding the website for Musuko Karate Academy was one of those projects.
Musuko is a family-run karate academy with a proud history of developing students from their first lessons through to national and international competition. The challenge was to create an online home that reflected both sides of the club: welcoming and accessible to someone considering their first karate class, while celebrating the achievements, dedication and professionalism of its athletes and instructors.
The finished website needed to do more than look good. It needed to make information easy to find, keep members updated, showcase the people behind the academy and provide a fully functioning online shop.
Here's how we brought it all together.
Understanding the Club and Its Identity
Before diving into the website itself, an important part of the project was understanding what makes Musuko different.
The club's values — To Inspire, To Learn, To Achieve — became a foundation for the design. The website needed to feel confident and professional without losing the welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere that the academy is built around.
Working closely with the Musuko team, we developed a consistent visual style using the club's established red, black and white colours, strong typography, striking imagery and carefully considered layouts.
The result is a design that feels unmistakably Musuko, whether you're visiting the homepage, exploring the instructor profiles or browsing the shop.

Getting Behind the Camera
One of the most rewarding parts of the project happened away from the computer.
Rather than relying entirely on stock photography or older website images, we arranged a photography session to capture new images of the academy's athletes and instructors. This gave us much more control over how the people behind Musuko were presented.
After the shoot, the photographs were carefully selected and edited in Adobe Lightroom, with attention paid to lighting, skin tones, backgrounds and composition. We also worked through existing photographs supplied by the club, improving crops and preparing replacement images where needed.

The final images were exported in web-friendly formats and optimised for use across different devices.
This process took time, but it made a significant difference. The website now features genuine Musuko athletes and instructors, creating a much more personal connection than generic imagery ever could.
Bringing the Academy's Achievements to Life
Musuko has a strong record of developing competitive karate athletes, alongside its everyday classes and training.
It was important that the website reflected those achievements without overwhelming visitors who simply wanted to learn more about joining.

We created dedicated Squad and Instructor Team areas, with individual profiles, photographs and clear information about athletes' and instructors' roles and achievements.
On the Squad page, we organised athletes into distinct groups, from national and international elite competitors to the wider elite and junior squads. Consistent portraits, carefully designed profile cards and responsive layouts help visitors explore the people and achievements behind the academy.
The Instructor Team
The Instructor Team page took a different visual approach, combining a striking dark Senior Instructors section with lighter, alternating instructor profiles. This gave us an opportunity to celebrate the personalities and experience behind Musuko while maintaining a consistent design across the website.

We also paid attention to how the academy presents its connections to karate's governing bodies.
Rather than letting affiliation information get lost in the background, we created a dedicated footer area to display the relevant governing-body identities with links to their official websites. This helps visitors find the information and understand the academy's place within the wider karate community.

Keeping the Website Connected to Facebook
Keeping a website up to date can easily become another job for an already busy club.
Musuko already uses Facebook to share news, photographs and updates with its community, so we wanted to avoid creating unnecessary work by asking the team to publish everything twice.
We integrated the academy's Facebook page directly into the website, allowing recent posts and their images to appear automatically in the homepage's Latest News section.
This gives website visitors a view of what's happening at the club while letting the Musuko team continue using a platform they're already familiar with.
It's a relatively small feature from a visitor's perspective, but a useful improvement to the way the website can be managed day to day.

Building an Online Shop That Works for the Club
The online shop was one of the most technically involved parts of the project. Musuko needed a clear way to sell clubwear, karate uniforms, protective equipment and merchandise, while accommodating different prices, product choices and ordering arrangements.

Making the Shop Easy to Explore
Using WooCommerce, we organised the range into a searchable catalogue with category and price filters. Clear product cards help customers browse club clothing, gis and training equipment without having to work through an overwhelming list.
The shop also highlights when clothing and selected supplier-dependent items may require an availability check before ordering. This puts important information where customers can see it.
We also focused on everyday usability: transparent prices, readable product details on mobile and straightforward filters make it easier to compare products and find the right item before placing an order.
Personalisation That Works
The clubwear required more than basic size and colour variations. On the Musuko Hoodie page, customers can choose a colourway, select their size and back-print style, and add optional initials — all within the product itself.
We developed detailed variations, supporting size guides and personalised options so customers can understand exactly what they're selecting before adding an item to their basket.
Clubwear follows scheduled supplier batches rather than immediate dispatch. Customers can see when the next order is planned, how long items may take and how they will be handed out, while their personalised choices carry through to the basket.

Beyond the product pages, we restyled the Cart, Checkout, customer account and order-confirmation experiences to match the Musuko brand. We integrated secure card payments through Stripe, including supported Apple Pay and Google Pay options, and developed branded transactional emails.
Together, these details make the shop straightforward for customers to use while accommodating the more complicated requirements of the academy's clubwear and equipment orders.
The Challenges Behind the Scenes
One of the biggest challenges was bringing together so many different elements while maintaining a consistent experience.
The site was built using WordPress and Divi 5, combining flexible page layouts with custom CSS and carefully targeted WooCommerce functionality.
Photography, product variations, responsive layouts, live social content, customer forms, payment processing and order emails all needed to work together.
Some stages required several rounds of refinement. A design that looked perfect on a large desktop could behave differently on a tablet or a narrow phone. Product names and customised options needed particular attention to ensure they remained easy to read throughout the shopping journey.
Rather than making sweeping changes, we worked through the website section by section, checking and refining each area before moving forward.
This approach made it easier to spot problems, protect completed work and keep the project moving in the right direction.

Responsive testing & refinement
We used Responsively App to preview the website across multiple screen sizes simultaneously, checking navigation, image positioning, spacing and readability. Alongside real-device checks, this helped us refine the experience before launch.
Testing, Launch and Handover
Before launch, we worked through the main pages and customer journeys across a range of screen sizes, including desktop computers, tablets and smaller mobile devices.
Designed for Every Screen
Responsive design was an important part of the rebuild. On smaller screens, we needed to preserve Musuko's distinctive visual identity while keeping navigation, page content and calls to action clear and easy to use.
The homepage retains its strong imagery and clear messaging on mobile, while the shop adapts its product cards, category filtering and sorting controls to a narrower screen. This allows visitors to explore the academy and browse its products without relying on a desktop computer.
We worked through the layouts section by section, refining spacing, image positioning and readability to create a consistent experience across different devices.
The shop also went through payment and refund testing, along with checks on order information, customer emails and the various stages of Checkout.
We handled the technical work involved in bringing the rebuilt website online, including the domain and hosting arrangements, and prepared a dedicated shop-management login so the academy could manage orders without needing access to the wider technical configuration.
The new Musuko Karate Academy website launched in October 2026.
Early feedback shared by the club has been extremely encouraging, with members responding positively to the finished website.
The Finished Result
This project demonstrates why a successful website is about much more than its appearance.
It's about understanding the people and organisation behind it, presenting their story properly and building something that makes their everyday activities easier.
Musuko now has a distinctive online home that brings together its identity, instructors, athletes, classes, club news and ecommerce in one consistent experience.
I'm grateful to Yvonne and the wider Musuko team for working so closely with me throughout the project, particularly when it came to gathering photographs, reviewing content and refining the finer details.
It's been a pleasure helping bring the new website to life.
